En 1974 se abrieron las puertas del Museo de Arte Prehispánico de México Rufino Tamayo en Oaxaca, Oaxaca. El estableció el museo para que todo el mundo podría ver su extensa colección. Como él dijo, todos los artículos incluídos en la colección son de importancia arqueológica y antropológica, pero si no fuera por sus méritos artísticos las obras se hubieran hechado a perder. Las personas, dijo Tamayo, que hicieron estos objetos fueron artistas, y es en ese sentido que él quería que vean la luz pública.

In 1974 Rufino Tamayo opened his Museum of Prehispanic Art in Oaxaca, Oaxaca. It was established to display his extensive collection. As he put it, all of the articles on display are important archaeologically and anthropologically, but if it wouldn´t have been for their artistic merit they would not have survived. The people, he said, who made these objects were artists, and it is in that regard that he wanted to put the items on display.
